Anyone thinking about leaving the service should read this book at least 18 months before separating, whether leaving after one hitch, or a 20+ year retirement. Mr. Henderson has laid out in a clear, logical manner all the things that must be considered before transitioning into the civilian work force. Most military people simply haven't thought about leaving the service until it is upon them. This book is a "primer". It will get you started in the creation of your own personal transition plan, one that meets your needs. Not a "one size fits all" book by any means, you build your own plan. The book lays out a foundation, the details are your personal choice. In fact, the amount of other sources of important information referenced in the book is one of it most valuable strengths.

This book is in my view the best out there for anyone separating from the military. This is especially true in light of todays internet use for obtaining employment. In addition, the resume section is clearly excellent. As a retired commander from the Navy I recommend the book without reservation!

I love every single book in the Lieberman series but this one is a particular favorite. As always, Lieberman is both worldly wise and all too human, with weaknesses that make him just that more believable and strangely lovable as well.
This time around, Lieberman and his associate, Hanrahan, are trying to guard the ex-wife and son of a mob informant while juggling the daily frustrations of their own lives. While the mystery will keep your attention, what is equally wonderful, to my mind, are Lieberman and Hanrahan, two guys who jump from the pages in vivid detail. Kaminsky is a wonderful writer and I hope more than mystery buffs discover him. He deserves the attention!

Dark, yet humorous. The entire Lieberman series is fantastic (I've read them all) but this one is the best. The plots are complex yet they move at breakneck speed. You really get involved in the characters and their lives. This cop series focuses on the minds and lives of the police, rather than focusing on the criminals. This series is tops. The only other writers that come close are Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane and S.J. Rozan.

Chicago police officers Abe Lieberman and Bill Hanrahan are partners affectionately dubbed by their peers as the "Rabbi and the Priest". Their latest case involves mob accountant Mickey Gornitz willing to testify against his boss if certain conditions are met. Mickey insists he will only talk with Abe, who was a high school classmate several decades ago. Mickey also demands that his ex-wife and teenage son receive full protection though he has not seem either of them in fifteen years until the informer disappears into the witness protection program. Reluctantly, the Cook County District Attorney's Office agrees.

However, almost immediately after the moment that the Boston cop handed over the former wife and son to Bill, thugs kidnap the duo. When the abduction includes murder, Bill blames himself and not the brass who thought the wife and kid were low priority. As Abe works on a couple of cases and some personal shtick, he tries to help his partner deal with a severe case of depression caused by deep feelings of guilt.

The Abe Lieberman police procedural series is constantly one of the best the sub-genre has to offer. The current tale, THE BIG SILENCE, is an intriguing look at Chicago, various ethnic groups, and relationships. The police investigation is engaging because no great revelation occurs, just hard work. Stuart M. Kaminsky other sleuths (see Rostnikov and Peters) are very good and deserve fan accolades, but clearly neither one holds a candle to the Lieberman books.

This compilation contains some poems from his book, "Solitudes Crowded with Loneliness," which I also bought, but there are also enough other poems in here from his ouvre to please most of his fans. Kaufman is not as well-known a name as Kerouac or Ginsberg, but he should be....in part because he influenced them both, but mainly because he was a GREAT poet. Like, dig, man!!

Of all the Beat poets, Bob Kauffman was the most naturally gifted. One gets the feeling that Kauffman dashed most of these poems off by cafe or bar light, and that's a big part of their power and their charm. These poems are not "finished" in the same sense as the standard, tenured faculty M.F.A. drivel that's defined as POETRY these ticky-tacky days. Rather, they are invitations: doorways into another time, place, and state of mind, and they're as pumped full of virtu (effortless grace) as a bop solo on the far side of midnight.

jazz, surrealism, and absurdism, all clash together in this splendid volume of work. kaufman was a contemporary of jack kerouac,allen ginsberg, leroi jones, and other beat luminaries of the 50's and 60's. he is credited with coining the term, "beat" and was the unofficial poet laureate of san francisco's north beach area.reclusive and mysterious, he spent many of his readings, reciting his poems from memory; very few volumes of his poems were in print;there were only three known books of his work: " The Ancient Rain," " Solitudes Crowded with Loneliness" and " Golden Sardine." his poetic influences are many, such as rimbaud and hart crane, but jazz is always at the heart of his work...to capture the essence of this brilliant poet, check out such pieces as " would you wear my eyes?" " i, too, know what i am not," and " walking parker home"

This encylopedia is fantastic!!!!! The authors write clearly and sensibly. I find it to be an extremely useful and convenient reference source. Armen Alchian's essay on property rights is particularly fine. I hope it is back in print soon.

This book is perfect for anyone age 14 and up trying to understand economics.Too many economics books muddy up the waters with dry bones statistics and other irrelevancies.This book presents the Big Picture of what REALLY matters...money flows,monetary policy,interest rates,wealth confiscation by inflation,free trade,right of contract,riskless society, etc..all of it in short little,to the point essays..like bullet point articles,explaining everything in language designed to impart knowledge..not to impress the reader with how smart the writer thinks he is.No wonder that Book Whatever in the review took issue with it's exposing of the failures of Marxism..they don't like to be reminded of them and of the misery their policies have perpetuated on mankind.

It's too bad that this excellent resource is out of print. I bought my copy when it was first published in the early '90s and have consulted it regularly ever since. Each article is clearly written and is nicely balanced -- neither too advanced nor vacuous. Editor David Henderson deserves loud applause for assembling such a stellar collection of essays.

Like the other reviewers, I loved this book. It will keep you interested in running for a long time to come. Henderson makes sense.

But I want to make sure that serious runners know what the book is really about. It's not a book about developing a competitive edge--at least not in the normal sense. It's not about living on the edge--in terms of high mileage training. It's about not falling off the edge--that is, staying healthy and interested in running over the long haul.

As much as I loved the book, I couldn't give it 5 stars because right now I'm in the competitive mode, determined to qualify and run the Boston Marathon. I need more tough training right now than Henderson promotes.

Once I run Boston, I'll come back to this book and love it more than ever.

I've only been running for about a year, and I was afraid this book would be too technical, or too focused on competitive/marathon runners. But I've gone through this book with a highlighter time and time again finding helpful tips to make running safer, healthier, and more fun. It's a keeper!

I am a triathlete, and as such I am always searching for ways to increase both my endurance and my enjoyment of excersize. Joe Henderson, not only makes reading about running fun but offers some unique and worthwhile suggestions for even the serious athlete.

Hey if it isn't still fun to run then read this book and follow his advice. Before long you will wonder why did not think to make these changes earlier and save yourself some unproductive pain.

Also, many of these lessons transfer nicely into other sports so do not be afraid to try them out.

I enjoyed the familiarity of knowing Florence Henderson. The books was as interesting about her life as the simple, down home recipes.

This is probably one of the best full accounts of all the major campaigns of World War II and includes the conclusions of many of the best military historians on what went wrong with the conflict and how the awesome consequences of the war were largely influenced by errors, mistakes and blunders. It is a MUST book for anyone who
is interested in the major military and polical blunders which determined the outcome of the most important struggle in world history.

Wonderfully written and researched, Here is My Hope takes you into the lives of several families who have been forced to deal with the reality of a loved one with a serious illness. This widely diverse group of people all had one thing in common--they found comfort and hope in the striking Jesus statue in the rotunda of the hospital.

Henderson does an outstanding job of taking you inside the lives and minds of the people in her stories. She takes you right along with them on their emotional journies through the hospital. This book will have you laughing and crying through the pages. Once you get started, you cannot put it down.

I too was at a total loss until someone recommended this book to me. The little identification signs in the nurseries are often inaccurate with the little they do say, and they're coming from such a different ("if you want to prevent the birds from eating your berries, cover the entire tree in garish mesh") perspective, for the most part, that I never felt I was getting anywhere.

The only faults with this title all have to do with too much information. The many appendices might have been better integrated with one another. There are times when the plant tables involve an awful lot of flipping back and forth, and could have been more cleanly organized. Finally, the sheer number of species of plant involved make it impossible to do what many garden books do; often you're looking at a description like "TS" (tall shrub) and wondering what shape it is, how dense, and so on. I went to the web and used the latin names to find descriptions of everything.

You'll need to go from this book to other sources to be sure of the appearance of things, and consulting with the average nursery or landscaper will still be necessary to discover things like when to prune. But this is the place to start, without question, for anyone in the midwest.

A friend asked recently about the subject of "trees which are attractive to birds." I hadn't
used this book for a while, my garden is getting mature, but was prompted to open it again
because I recalled it has so many lists of plants arranged from every perspective
one can think of (everything from "Best butterfly nectar sources in Minnesota"
to "Midwestern mammals which use snags.") I love these lists. There
may not be a plethora of photos here, but armed with one of these lists and any good
horticulture reference, one can find a plant for any midwestern landscape need, and
bring wildlife into the garden to boot. Despite the 1987publication date, this book is timely
and up to the minute. If anything, it was ahead of it's time; gardeners and landscapers
are just now catching up to the information contained in this book.

Before finding this book, I was stumbling and haphazardly identifying and assembling the plants and trees I wanted to accomplish my goals of drawing wildlife to my property, providing for them and returning the land I have removed from from nature by building in a development (my lot is 5 acres).

This book will be ragged before I am done AND I will most probably have to buy a second copy.
